How to turn lecture slides into notes you can actually revise from

A lecture slide deck is not a set of notes and revising from one directly is why so much term-time work doesn't survive to the exam. Slides are cues for a spoken explanation: three bullet fragments that made complete sense while someone talked over them and mean almost nothing six weeks later. The job of turning a deck into study material is specifically the job of putting the missing explanation back — and then converting the result into something you can be tested on, because a reconstructed explanation you only ever re-read decays just as fast as the slides did.

What's missing from a slide

Open any lecture slide and list what isn't on it. The causal connection between the bullets. The example the lecturer gave. The caveat they mentioned but didn't write. Which of the six items is examinable and which is context. Why this slide follows the previous one. That's most of the lecture, and none of it survives in the file.

This is why students who "have all the slides" often perform worse than expected: possession of the deck feels like possession of the content, and the gap only becomes visible when a question requires the connective tissue rather than the bullets.

Reconstruct in the same week, not in April

The reconstruction is cheap while you still remember the lecture and expensive once you don't. Twenty minutes the same day gets you a usable set of notes; the same job in revision week means re-learning the material from a textbook, which takes hours and produces something in the textbook's framing rather than your lecturer's.

The conversion

    Go through the deck once and mark each slide: core, context, or example

    Two minutes. Most decks are about 40% core. Everything after this step happens only to the core slides, which is what makes the process fast enough to actually do weekly.

    For each core slide, write the sentence the bullets were fragments of

    One or two full sentences, prose, with the causal words the bullets dropped — because, therefore, unless, only when. Those words are the content. A bullet list without them is a set of nouns.

    Add what the lecturer said that isn't on the slide

    The example, the aside, the "this always comes up". If you attended, you have perhaps a day before this is gone. If you have the recording, this is what to scrub for — not a full re-watch.

    Mark the examinable claims explicitly

    A star, a colour, whatever. You're deciding now, while you have the lecturer's emphasis in your head, so that revision-you doesn't have to treat all forty slides as equally important.

    Convert the starred claims into questions

    This is the step that makes the notes survive. A reconstructed explanation you re-read decays like anything else; a question you can be tested on doesn't. Five to fifteen questions per lecture.

    Notes in a folder you never open are a diary. The questions need to end up somewhere that surfaces them again without you deciding to go looking.

The recording, used properly

If lectures are recorded, the temptation is to re-watch at 2x. That's a four-hour week and it's passive — the lowest-yield activity available. Use the recording as a lookup instead: convert the deck first, and only scrub to the timestamps of the slides where your reconstruction stalled.

A transcript changes this materially, because it makes the recording searchable — you can find where the lecturer explained slide 14 in fifteen seconds instead of scrubbing for five minutes. What good converted notes look like

  • Shorter than the deck, not longer. If your notes are longer than the slides you've transcribed rather than processed.
  • Written in sentences, because sentences carry the causal direction that bullets lose.
  • Explicitly ranked — you can see at a glance which five claims per lecture matter.
  • Attached to questions, so the notes have a job after the first read.
  • In your own words wherever possible, since the translation is where the understanding happens and the verbatim version is where it doesn't.

Don't convert every deck

Some modules are assessed by coursework, some lectures are optional context, some decks are genuinely just the textbook. Converting everything evenly is how the habit dies in week five. Rank your modules by exam weight, convert the top two properly and skim the rest — an uneven system you maintain beats a complete one you abandon, and this is the same triage logic that governs one-week revision, applied earlier and more calmly.
